2000-04

  • Joint study, with the Moffat Centre at Caledonian University, Glasgow, for VisitBritain on The Structure, Role and Activities of Competitor National Tourism Organisations (NTOs). The study benchmarks VisitBritain against selected competitor NTOs - in terms of performance and effectiveness.

  • Study for the Swedish Tourist Authority on Selected National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) in Europe. The study provided a comparative analysis of the structures, roles and responsibilities of the NTOs. It evaluated their success in terms of performance and return on investment and highlighted best practice in public-private sector partnerships in tourism management and promotion.

  • International market study on travel and tourism demand post-11 September for a leading UK tour operator.

  • Report for IPK International on Global Travel Trends in 2003 and Prospects for 2004, based on the results of IPK's annual Pisa Forum. Similar reports were prepared in 2001 and 2002.

  • Several studies/reports for VisitBritain's Insights, Philadelphia-based Global Insight, IPK International and other organisations on outbound travel markets - eg France, Germany, USA, China, Japan.

  • Participated in several satellite tourism accounts (STA) studies for the World Travel & Tourism Council, measuring the economic impact of travel and tourism on different national and state/provincial economies - eg Hungary, Malaysia, Croatia, South Africa, China, the Algarve, South Carolina and Montenegro. Provided qualitative analysis and market intelligence on trends and developments, as well as - for certain studies - policy recommendations.

  • Joint consulting partner and report author of an APEC Tourism Working Group study on Best Practice in Tourism Satellite Account Development. Reviewed the standards and practices involved in TSA development across Asia Pacific, including data collection methods for visitor surveys. Conducted gap analysis and identified best practice case studies. The report was launched at the APEC Tourism Ministers meeting in Mexico in June 2002.

  • Study and report for the World Tourism Organization (WTO) Business Council on Public-Private Sector Co-operation in Tourism. Identified and presented best practice case studies covering, for example, marketing, research, product development, environmental and cultural heritage protection, technological innovation and local community development.

  • Sub-contracted by SRI International to work on a USAID tourism development project for the Lebanon, focusing on specific rural regions.

  • Carried out a number of benchmarking surveys of the European travel market for various European tour operating/retail travel groups. Projects covered different market segments, such as senior and youth travel, adventure holidays and the self-catering/holiday homes market.

  • Studies and reports for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) on the French, Italian, German and Swiss outbound travel markets. The reports included an analysis of trends over the past decade and short- to medium-term growth forecasts.

1990-99

  • Two-year retainer to provide research and market analysis for RCI, the USA-based timeshare exchange company.

  • One of eight international partners involved in a European Commission DGTREN (formerly DGVII) transport research project, ARTIST, on the impact of tourism on urban transport flows. The project included case studies of how selected cities plan for and manage their tourism flows.

  • Contracted by WTO to advise the Indian Government on the restructuring of its national tourism organisation and the establishment of a National Tourism Board.

  • White Paper for WTO entitled: Adapting to Change - A World Tourism Organization for the 21st Century.

  • Sub-contracted by lead partner on European Commission DGXXIII project to assess the potential economic impact of tourism on certain economically less favoured regions of Europe. Responsible for conducting case studies in Spain and France.

  • Study for WTTC on the growth potential of travel and tourism for the Middle East region.

  • Several studies for WTO, OECD and PATA on the roles, structures and responsibilities of National Tourism Administrations and on public-private sector co-operation.

  • Contributed to the development of a prototype Outbound Travel Monitor (continuous outbound travel market survey) for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

  • Study for PATA on the impact of the Gulf War on Asia Pacific tourism.

  • Market study for British Airways on the traffic potential for a new continental European hub.

  • An analysis of key European markets for the Irish Tourist Board (Bord Fáilte).

  • Study for Geneva Airport to identify new markets for French-speaking Switzerland.
